Seven Ways to Raise Your Energy When You're Feeling Low

While there is no universal measurement of our own personal energy levels, there are some things that science has proven can help to raise your energy when you're feeling a little low and slow.

Most of the activities on the list below should work for you in one situation or another. And remember - your outlook plays a big role too! So if you're new to any of these suggestions, you may have to try them a few times before you notice any difference.

Here is the list of ways to raise your energy in no particular order...

Meditation to Feel Good

1. Meditate

Even if just for a few minutes, sitting in meditation can help to reset your energy. It's not about escaping your thoughts or feelings, but sitting with them and allowing them to happen.

How to Meditate to Raise Your Energy

Find a quiet spot to sit or lay.
Get your favourite props, cushions or blankets to make yourself as comfy as possible. Because when your body is uncomfortable it gets very easily distracted, making it more difficult to stay present for your meditation.
Choose your favourite guided meditation or sit in silence.
Close your eyes and take a few deep, deliberate breaths.
Slowly allow your breath to return to it's own pace and pay attention to how each inhale and exhale feels without trying to alter or change it in anyway.
You can do this for anywhere from 3 minutes to 30 minutes.

Singing in the bathroom

2. Sing

You know how they say, "Dance like nobody's watching"? Well we say that about signing. Sing like no one is listening. Actually singing out loud can shift your internal vibrations to help raise your energy.

How to Sing Like No One Is Listening

Find a place where you won't be disturbed. This could be your kitchen, bedroom, living room or bathroom (and our voices always sound better in the bathroom). Put on your favourite song and sing your heart out! You could feel an energy shift within a few seconds.

3. Give

When we give our brain releases chemicals like serotonin (a mood-mediating chemical), dopamine (a feel-good chemical) and oxytocin (a compassion and bonding chemical). If you don't have a regular habit of giving, we suggest you try to make it something you do on a weekly or even daily basis. You'll quickly notice that it feels really, really good.

How to Raise Your Energy Through Giving

Pay it forward. Donate to a local organization. Volunteer. Offer kindness to a stranger. Give someone a gift for no reason. Pay someone a compliment.

4. Go Outside

Nature helps to recenter and ground you. Stepping outside to breath fresh air instead of the stale inside air you've been breathing all day can have a big impact on your mindset and overall health.

How Getting Outside can Raise Your Energy

This one is a bit of a no-brainer. Just step outside, take a deep breath and you're sure to feel a shift in your energy.

Take it one step further by going for a walk in the woods. Research shows that spending time around trees helps to lower stress levels by reducing stress-related hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

EFT Tapping to Feel Good

5. Tapping

Tapping can disarm the fight or flight mode. It helps to centre you and can recode your brain and body by clearing any energetic charges that are attached to negative emotions or thoughts.

Tapping draws on the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture which stimulates certain energy pathways. You should be tapping hard enough to feel it but not hard enough to hurt. You can tap as many or as few times as you'd like, but a minimum of 7 - 10 is recommended in each spot.

How to Raise Your Energy with Tapping

There are many different methods and spots for tapping. But I'm sharing part of my go-to tapping exercise called SET developed by Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake from Australia. (see a simple YouTube video here.

Use two fingers on your dominant hand.
Start by tapping the space between your eye brows.
Then the side of the eye at the temple.
Move the tapping to under the eye/top of the cheek.
Under the nose/above the top lip.
Then tap under the bottom lip/chin.
Tap underneath your collarbone.
Move to tapping under the arm, just below the armpit on the top of the ribs.

Then take a deep breath and notice how calm you feel.

6. Exercise

Moving your body is a sure fire way to move around stale energy. You should be moving your body daily in any way that feels good for you.

How to Move Your Body to Raise Your Energy

We all have different bodies, different lifestyles and different needs - so the most important part is to move your body in a way that works well for you. Some of our favourite ways to move...

  • Dancing
  • Walking
  • Yoga
  • Lifting Weights
  • House Cleaning

7. Breathwork

Breathwork is a general term for any type of exercise or technique that uses intentional breath to shift your energy or mood. Focused breathwork can help to disarm a sympathetic response. It has the power to improve your mental and physical health.

How to Practice Breathwork to Raise Your Energy

Breathwork can be done with an instructor or on your own. If you are working with a facilitator, they will invite you to lay down with the support of cushions, pillows and blankets and guide you with intentionally breathing techniques.

To practice breathwork on your own, I suggest a simple exercise to keep you present and focused. My go-to is 4-7-8 breath.

Get comfy and close your eyes.
Take a couple deep breaths before you begin.
Breathe in for 4 counts.
Hold your breath for 7 counts.
Breathe out for 8 counts.
Repeat at a minimum of 4 - 8 times or for as long as it takes to notice a sense of calm washing over your body.
